PICTURES OF AN EXHIBITION – Event Packaging

An event that took place in the Cork School of Music where final year student Pierre O’Reilly and Cork artist Stephen Murphy collaborated in a concert/exhibition

The event is a reference to a very famous piece of classical music called‚ Pictures at an Exhibition‚ by 19th century Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky.

In this case, Stephen Murphy created 10 paintings on the subject of growing up, whereupon composer Pierre O’Reilly, wrote ten pieces of music in response to each painting. The collaboration culminated in a public exhibition of the paintings, and a concert performance of the music, with a 72 piece orchestra and a 28 piece choir, all from the pool of talent within the C.S. of M.

When designing the event packaging and collateral materials for the event I used one of Stephens paintings as a strong visual reference, coupled with other features like the wood cut border used on the original Mussorgsky concert program, and typography used on theatre posters at the time. Stephens paintings were projected over head the orchestra during the performance to accompany the music as a visual reference.

Following the performance I designed packaging for the event recording (cd) and documentary (dvd) all of which created a sense of continuity throughout all event collateral materials.
