Kilteevan is a townland not far from Roscommon town where I had the privilege to work with local a community group designing the heritage trail signage for local sites of historical interest.
My first meeting with Eileen Fahey the groups representative was in the local community hall, once a former church, which I was amazed to see had a hand painted fresco on the ceiling done at the turn of the 20th century by two Italian brothers, The Brentini’s, who had done similar work in the Sacred Heart Church in Roscommon town, and travelled to Kilteevan, staying and socialising with the locals while working in the church.
It was a great start to what turned out to be a very enjoyable project. Traditional heritage sign units housed the Informative graphic panels I designed on subjects covering the Community Hall Ceiling, the former Churches historical background, local land marks and a fabulous cemetery with a crypt belonging to the local land owners of the time,The Mapother Family, through whose blood line can be traced down the centuries and across the Atlantic to one ‘Tom Cruise’. Yep, the very one.
It always amazes me what I learn on these projects and working with Eileen and her colleagues was a memorable experience.
